side East leader named Nyoman Madera preserved the integrity of the ancestor group. In 1908 he was appointed by the Dutch as leader of a western subdistrict. He obtained houseland in the area's administrative center, built an extension of Market side East and, although a younger son, became as significant to the colonial traditions of the entire house as Arta is to the classical.

A magician of controversy recalled

After 1908, Madera constructed on this new houseland the first major extension temple of Market side East. His reputation as prime mover of he branch group has in no way diminished thirty-five to forty years since his death.

Although the reasons for his early demise are seldom discussed, a probable diagnosis is offered by collateral Market side East members ill disposed toward the newer branch: judging from his sexual habits (he attracted women by black magic) and his partly amputated left arm, lie died of syphilis. Some parties surmise that his scheme was to preserve his lands intact, since no one outside the ancestor-group would buy property sullied with a corpse and later deemed haunted, as evidenced by the repercussions when a kinsman tried to build a house nearby: his child was stricken mute; then he went blind temporarily and his wife went mad.
