This story of the rise to prominence of I Gde Arta is plausible but unverifiable. Standardized accounts of migrations from the sacred center of Bali to its wilder, western fringes of diminished courtly influence - with typical episodes of waystations erected. tribulations endured, and subsequent civic accomplishments serve to legitimate the status of many Balinese groups. Yet tile tale is ritually corroborated by ceremonies at the distant temples regarded as way-stations of the migration. Marketside East's rights to commemorate its ancestors there are acknowledged by the local groups associated with the same temples. For the period between I Gde Arta's installment as first secretary and the Dutch conquest, the story of Marketside East is partly confirmed by the legends of other Tabanan dynasties. Yet these would likely dispute Marketside East's own self-aggrandizing. interpretations and elaborations through time of its story, such as the following.

Arta, they say, had a single son, his successor, known simply as 'First Secretary . It is difficult to know how inany generations this standardized second generation actually represents, and Marketside East's members do riot care. What illatters to theni is that First Secretary bore three sons, riot actually remembered, but still commemorated in the layout of Marketside East. The eldest succeeded as secretary and dwelled in the oldest, central quarter; the second, supervisor of palace repairs, lived in the cast quarter, and the third, overseer of royal ricelands, lived in the south

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
