nephew, a member of the Market side East's north quarter. When he and his wife moved to another location, they took the chechatu with them but not the mother. This left the sort supporting his mother without her rightful income; consequently, the mother expressed the unthinkable intention of returning to her own family of origin to live. Such discord revolves around the fact that a member of north Market side East refused to Honor the bequest of Madera, whose direct descendants regard him as their sacred founder, but who appears to many town-based kinsfolk as merely a dead magician front a has-been offshoot of their ancestor-group.

Throughout the later colonial and earlier modern periods, the temple and houseyard founded by Madera fell into disrepair, and his legacy of paddy was depleted.
The worst times coincided with the PKI (Communist Party of Indonesia) rise to power in the early 1960, when property was reportedly swindled by such officials. or simply taken over by sharecroppers, PKI sympathizers sheltered by such officials. Land reform confused the picture even more, but by then holdings had fallen below the new limits of the law. By 1972 Madera's sons and grandsons had instigated pro-
ceedings in the agrarian offices of Tabanan and Jakarta to regain lands now considered to have been acquired illegally. Like many Balinese tinder stress, Madera's son decided to seek advice from a seer (balian). He received a stock diagnosis that a redoubtable shade was responsible for the family's difficulties. Within the traditions of the subhouse, there was only one reasonable interpretation. Accordingly, long neglected ceremonial options were reactivated to atone for past remiss in the
subhouse, religions ceremonies, so to propitiate ancestor Madera, who even in his
life time, descendants reasoned, had possessed remarkable spiritual powers.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
