About Walzenhausen
General Information
As you see, our region was preferred by the nature. We are not stingy with our natural attractions, we pass them on purely to you. The Lake Constance in front of you, the hills of the Appenzeller country in the surrounding and the own desire to discover everything what the nature offer in abundance. Everything of that makes Walzenhausen to be unique.
Village walk
Walzenhausen is situaded in the east part of the canton Appenzell A.Rh., approx. 670 meters over sea or 300m over the Lake Constance. The village unitised into three districts: “Dorf”, “Platz” and “Lachen”. After a rich history as a textile-village, Walzenhausen shows up today as well-known cure and holidays place, which develop to its own health area in the Appenzeller country.
Places to visit
St.Gallen
St. Gallen, metropolis of Eastern Switzerland is justly proud of its prestigious past. The city’s name and origins can be traced back to the founding of the monastery by the wandering Irish monk Gallus, about 612 AD. You’ll encounter the past with every step as you stroll through the attractive old town. Discover the world-famous oriel windows, narrow lanes and lively squares with inviting street cafés. The prestigious past has given way to a blossoming present. St. Gallen is a modern and cosmopolitan city, watched over by the imposing baroque Cathedral in the heart of the stunning "Stift” district. This beautiful district has been awarded World Cultural Heritage Status and is under the protection of UNESCO.
Appenzell
Explore our countryside, its gently rolling hills and the mountains of the Alpstein, its special culture and living traditions. Share our pleasure in the healthy pre-alpine air. Take advantage of the many different opportunities we offer for restoring and refreshing body, soul and spirit. Let Appenzell cast its magic spell on you, as you enjoy our hospitality. We look forward to your visit and are always here for you.
Lake of Constance
You can go directly with the “experience-railway Rheineck - Walzenhausen” till to the Lake Constance, where different shiptrips offer you to see the whole lake region. How would it be to go for a visit to Constance, Meersburg, Lindau or the well-known “flower island” Mainau?
Museums
Appenzell Museum
The museum “Appenzell” is located in the city hall of Appenzell, which was builded in the 16th century in the heart of Appenzell. It shows its history and culture of Appenzell on six floors.
Henry Dunant Museum
The Henry Dunant in Heiden is dedicated to the personality and the life's work of Henry Dunant (1828-1910). But not only the memory of the initiator and founder of the Red Cross is showing up in this museum. There is also an area, which is dedicated to Dunants visions of a world without war and social emergency.
Flying Museum Altenrhein
The "Flying Museum Altenrhein" wants to preserve the witnesses of aviation history. We not just exhibit vintage planes here but we keep them "ready to fly". In several hangars we show not only the history of Altenrhein airport but also the history of the famous Dornier company since they developed many historic airplanes right at the location of the museum. You will find ancient jet fighter planes of the Swiss Airforce still in their original condition.
