Board of Game Accepting Proposals November 15, 2002
The Alaska Board of Game is accepting proposals to change hunting and trapping regulations in the Southcentral and Southwest Regions. These regions include Game Management Units 6 through 11 and 13 through 17. Proposals are due December 6, 2002 and they will be considered at the March 7-17, 2003 meeting in Anchorage after a public comment period. Regulations open in this “call for proposals” include seasons, bag limits, permits, and use of game for these management units.
The board is also accepting proposals for opening special early season hunts for taking children hunting. In 2001 the state legislature authorized the Board of Game to establish early hunting seasons in order to encourage adult hunters to take 8 to 17-year old children hunting before the normal school year begins. Earlier this year the board adopted a four-day August youth hunt for moose in a portion of Unit 20B near Fairbanks. The board expects to open additional areas where “take a child hunting” seasons are offered, particularly in response to public requests.
