Secretary Powell (Sept. 8): "We mourn the loss of every life and our hearts go out to the family members. OSCE Conference
Secretary Powell (Sept. 7): "The United States is honored that Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Alphonso Jackson will lead a distinguished delegation to the conference... on tolerance and the fight against racism, xenophobia and discrimination which the Belgian Government will graciously host in Brussels on September 13 and 14." Secretary Powell recently offered remarks at a State Department ceremony formalizing America's commitment to participate in the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi, Japan. The theme of the United States Pavilion  will be "The Franklin Spirit," honoring Benjamin Franklin.

Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky recently announced that the United States was joining the Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development (Seed) Initiative.

This fiscal year, more than 50,000 refugees will be resettled in the U.S. First, they must be found, pre-screened, interviewed, subjected to security and medical checks, allocated to resettlement agencies, and booked on flights. The full participation of women in society is a key factor in creating stable democracies, prosperous economies, and peace. A new fact sheet describes the U.S. commitment to women in Europe and Eurasia.


The Bureau of Public Affairs released a new Spanish language website spanish.state.gov.  This site features a selection of information from state.gov, including About the State Department, Secretary of State, Background Notes, and International Business Support. [more]

Background Notes are factual publications that contain information on all the countries of the world with which the United States has relations. See the whole collection.

In 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt, flanked by the leaders of 26 Allied countries, first coined the term "United Nations" to describe the continued fight against the Axis Powers. Read more in a new fact sheet.
