At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a cloud of steam issues from a vent against the backdrop of distant Mauna Loa's snow-mantled contour.WILLIAM ING/Tribune-Herald
Mauna Loa is growing restless

Since July, an increasing number of earthquakes -- more than 350 -- have been recorded deep beneath the summit caldera of Earth's largest active volcano. Mauna Loa has also been swelling for two years, suggesting magma is filling the chamber inside.

sen. daniel kahikina akaka
EDITOR'S NOTE: Hawaii's two U.S. senators each turned 80 in the same week -- Sen. Daniel Inouye on Sept. 7 and Sen. Daniel Akaka on Sept. 11. The Associated Press talked with both men about this milestone, their lives, and their service to the islands. Jerry's Nugget celebrates 40th
As I mentioned earlier, Jerry's Nugget in North Las Vegas is celebrating its 40th and is having some great promos through Nov. 21. One I particularly like is the '60s Blackjack Tournament on Oct. 16, complete with tie-dye and peace signs; qualifying for the tournament begins Sept. 18.
