Timothy E. Wirth, President of the United Nations Foundation, and former U.S. Senator, urged international non-governmental organizations meeting in London for the Countdown 2015 Roundtable to fulfill the right of all the world’s citizens to protect themselves from disease, poverty, and violence. Countdown 2015 is the major international event marking the 10-year anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo. UN & Global Security

The People Speak: America’s Role in the World is a public education effort that was launched in 2003 to raise the level of national dialogue about America’s role in the world. Our efforts continue on this project, which is made possible by a nonpartisan coalition of non-profit organizations committed to fostering open-minded discussion on critical global issues. In September 2004, high schools, colleges, civic and business groups will be asked to organize events around one or more of the following topics:

• American Power and Global Security
• Energy Choices and Environmental Challenges
• Prosperity in a Global Economy

At the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000, 189 countries pledged to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environ-mental degradation, and discrimination against women.
