American Foreign Service Association

The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), established in 1924, is the professional association of the U.S. Foreign Service. With 11,200 dues-paying members, AFSA represents 23,000 active and retired Foreign Service employees.

AFSA's principal missions are to enhance the effectiveness of the Foreign Service, to protect the professional interests of its members, to ensure the maintenance of high professional standards for both career diplomats and political appointees, and to promote America's national security and economic prosperity.

The American Foreign Service Association has published a booklet titled "Inside A U.S. Embassy" which you may find of interest.  Some of the subjects covered in the book include "Who Works in an Embassy" and "The FSO in Action".  The book will help you to familiarize yourself with the work of the Foreign Service. The booklet is available online at www.afsa.org/inside/index.html.
