Libya: Termination of National Emergency
Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli (Sept. 20): "...this step is taken in response to actions that Libya has taken over the past nine months to address concerns by the international community about its weapons of mass destruction programs."

Response to Violence in Iraq
Secretary Powell (Sept. 17): "[W]hat you are seeing in response are Iraqi leaders who are courageous, who are stepping forward, putting themselves at risk, young men who are stepping forward to being police officers and members of the army, and you're seeing coalition troops now starting to respond much more aggressively than they might have in recent weeks." U.S. and Afghan officials formally opened the Dahnow Dahbori School in West Kabul. The school is a primary learning institution, complete with a technology center, that will serve over 900 Afghan girls and boys. It is one of 246 primary and middle schools currently being built or refurbished by the U.S. Agency for International Development, with 8 new schools scheduled for completion by the end of September 2004.
