Sooke
is named for the "T'Sou-ke" Indian Band, the early inhabitants
of the area. The name "T'Sou-ke" was given to a species of stickleback
fish that, at one time, was quite numerous in Sooke Basin.
Sooke
is located on the south western tip of Vancouver Island a scenic half
hour drive from BC's capital city Victoria. As a part of a temperate rainforest,
the Sooke district has one of the mildest climates in Canada. This pleasant
climate can be enjoyed while hiking, biking, or horseback riding on some
of the local trails, or kayaking or sailing in the local waters of Sooke
Basin and beyond. The area is world famous for its marine ecology. Nestled
in protective waters it is a diving wonderland, and sports fishers come
to enjoy the natural beauty of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Once an old
railway line, the Galloping Goose Trail is now a favourite recreational
trail. This scenic trails guides you through the West shore communities
from Victoria to Sooke and passes through all types of classic British
Columbian terrain; coniferous forests merge to streams, rivers, and lakes
as you walk, cycle, or horseback ride the trail. The trail passes close
to beaches, above roaring rivers, and around pristine lakes.
Activities are available year-round salt and freshwater fishing, cycling,
scuba diving, hiking through old-growth forests, kayaking, beachcombing,
whale and bird watching. Many coastal attractions include theatre, artisan
studios, and art galleries along with festivals and tours that will delight
the senses with imaginative, cultural and entertaining pleasures. This
quiet community includes Sooke and East Sooke, all bordering Sooke Basin
and Sooke Harbour. Both the harbour and basin are well protected from
offshore winds providing excellent kayaking opportunities, sheltered boat
launch ramps and charter fishing guides. Sooke Potholes are a swimmers
paradise and are one of the more popular swimming spots in the capital
region. This cool swimming spot is a scenic half hour drive from the city
centre. Wonder along A small creek that runs under a wooden bridge then
further upstream you will discover a waterfall complete with mossy rocks
and shallow pools of clear water, a beautiful area to immerse yourself
in the moment.
