Miscellaneous Netscape Issues

"I have recently downloaded Netscape Navigator version 3.0 from the IT&E homepage. When I double-click on the Netscape Navigator icon, I cannot login to the Internet. Is something wrong?"

A major difference between versions 2.02 and 3.0 is the use of Dial-up Networking. If you have Windows 95, you will need to use this protocol to access your Talaya account. When you install Netscape Navigator 3.0, the following shortcut icons should appear on your desktop:

You will need to double-click on the Dial Talaya icon first to bring up the dialer. Enter your username (with a ".ppp" at the end) and your password (lowercase letters) and click on Connect. When the dialer has authenticated your username and password and has connected you, then double-click the Netscape Navigator icon. You will be able to access your new web browser and start enjoying the Internet!

Instructions for installing Netscape 3.0 (32-bit version)

If you have either obtained Netscape Navigator 3.0 from Talaya or have downloaded the software from the Internet, you now have the ability to do things like view animated pictures, listen to stereo-quality sound, and even watch full motion video!

Netscape Navigator was made for 32-bit operating systems such as Windows 95 or Windows NT. As such, it requires a different connection than dialing-in directly as with Netscape 2.02.

If you are using a 32-bit operating system such as Windows 95 or Windows NT, you will need to create a Dial-Up Networking Connection. Doing this is easy, and takes only 6 steps:

Click on the Start button on the taskbar. Select Programs, Accessories, and then Dial-Up Networking. This will bring you into the Dial-Up Networking window – choose Make New Connection. Double-click on this icon, and then follow the instructions.

The first window that comes up asks you the following:

Name the connection. For this example, we will name the connection "new". If you already have a modem selected in the blank, make sure it is correct. If you are not sure, the click on Configure and have your computer detect your modem for you. Click on Next.

The next window will ask you to enter the following information:

Leave the Area Code field blank, and enter 646-6000 in the Telephone number field. The information chosen in the Country Code field should be United States of America (1). Click on Next.

This final window will ask you to verify the connection you have just made. If you're sure that your information has been entered correctly, then click on Finish to create the connection.

The Dial-Up Networking connection window will open again and display the connection that you have just made.

Click on the icon of your new connection and drag the icon onto your desktop (you will have to minimize of close all running programs to drag the icon onto your desktop.) A message asking you if you would like to create a shortcut to this connection will appear on your screen. Click on OK.

Congratulations! You have successfully created a dial-up networking connection to access Talaya! Every time you would like to log onto the Internet, you will have double-click on the new icon to activate the dialer. You will then need to enter your username and password and then dial-in. When you have successfully made a connection to Talaya, double click on the Netscape icon.
