Sudan
Deputy Spokesman Ereli (Oct. 5): "...what we are going to be looking for is an end to attacks by government forces on the civilian population, no further breaches of the N'Djamena cease-fire by government forces, steps by the Government of Sudan to stop the Jingaweit militia from attacking civilians, and should the government be unable to do so, it should request international assistance to fulfill its responsibility in this regard." Travel to Brazil and Grenada
Secretary Powell is visiting Brazil for meetings with government officials, business leaders, and other Brazilians.  The Secretary welcomes this opportunity to meet with the leaders of this important hemispheric partner, and discuss the strength and depth of our relationship, including the situation in Venezuela and Haiti, cooperation on security issues and trade promotion. Secretary Powell will travel to Grenada for a first-hand assessment in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.

Through the U.S. Resettlement Program, the United States admitted 52,875 refugees representing more than 40 nationalities during fiscal year 2004. This represents more than an 85% increase over the number of refugees admitted in fiscal year 2003.

The U. S. is committed to helping the people of the Caribbean recover and rebuild from the devastating series of hurricanes that have hit the region.  To date we have identified $13.3 million dollars to support vital humanitarian and reconstruction needs. The President has requested additional money from Congress.


"First Steps: The International Response to the Landmine Crisis," a documentary on the global landmine problem, will be broadcast on WHUT/Howard University Television on October 8.

The Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy has released its 2004 annual report assessing public diplomacy policies and programs of the U.S. Government.
