Fly Fishing Alaska 2003 Trophy Rainbow

2004 Fishing Reports
June 6

On June 4 of 2003, a guest landed a 33"x20" monster rainbow on the middle river. On June 4 of 2004, Stacy guided a gentlemen rookie fly fisher to a 34"x18" rainbow on the middle river. Who wants to book for June 4, 2005?

Stacy and I went down to the Anchor River on Saturday for one more fun day of chasing Kings on the fly. We each hooked up with numberous fish. My highlight was landing and releasing a 42" chromer, fresh on the evening tide. Now, we are ready to devote full attention to the Kenai. The Upper opens on June 11 and sockeye have already been spotted. The water is beautiful and we can't wait to float and fish it.

June 3

Stacy and I took the weekend off to chase Kings on the Anchor River. We had a blast on Saturday, hooking about a dozen chrome bright fish and each landing a couple pushing 30lbs. The power of a fresh King continues to amaze me. On June 1, I had a great trip with a family of four. Everyone caught their largest rainbow trout ever, including fish from 26-30".

May 25

Stacy and I started the season together breaking in several new Sage TCR and XP rods. Stacy hooked a 32 inch rainbow on the first trip. I soon followed up with a 31 incher on the next one. We absolutely love the 691-4 TCR for our style of fishing. I also like the 9'6" 6 and 7 wt Sage XPs. I guided our first guests on May 20-23. Two 30 inch rainbows and numberous 24-29 inch fish were landed along with an assortment of smaller rainbows and a couple dollies. Loons, swans, nesting eagles, newly birthed moose calves and one lone caribou added to the magic of the "Mystic Waters".

Tight Lines and Screaming Reels,

Fred

Kenai River Trophy Rainbow 2003...Are you still smiling Ben?
Stacy and I are holding a fish taken by our guest and friend Ben Matheson. Ben hooked the fish while wading. After some shaking and thrashing, the big bow parked and Ben could do nothing. Little by little, the fish was taking line in small bursts. After 30 min, I got Ben in the boat with Stacy manning the net. We moved laterally to the fish and got him working downstream. He finally jumped and we saw him for the first time. The sounds three grown men make upon seeing such a fish cannot be described. Stacy made the scoop and we hit the bank for some careful pictures before releasing the beast. This fish could not be held by one person. He was just too big, girthy and powerful.

Congratulations Ben!
