Tips for Writing Messages
The tips above about writing your profile also apply to sending messages.
In addition to those tips, the following tips are also worth considering:-
- Take the initiative. Don't wait for other people to send you a message.
- Avoid giving your e-mail address until you feel happy to do so.
Some people feel threatened if you give it out in the first message.
See how the conversation goes before exchanging such information.
- After the first message, ask some 'open' questions - ones that are not easily
answered by saying yes or no.
There are some examples below.
- If you ask a question, often you can get to know more about the person by
asking why they gave that answer. For example, if someone says their favourite
film is 'Sleepless in Seattle' you can find out whether they just fancy
Meg Ryan / Tom Hanks, or are romantics by asking why they like that film.
Mind you, do avoid making it seem like an interrogation!
- In a similar vein, if someone asks you a question, don't just simply answer
the question and send the message.
Try and add additional information so that the pot of conversation is fuller at
the end than at the beginning.
- Exchange personal experiences in addition to information about the sort of
person you are.
- Be patient when waiting for someone to reply. Some people don't log onto the
Internet as often as others do.
- If someone doesn't seem interested in talking to you, don't take it personally.
It's much better to move on to the next person rather than getting upset with
the person that didn't show any interest in you. After all, it's much better to
discover something is not going to work early on rather than wasting time on it
and finding out later.
- After a few message exchanges Select Club members can consider arranging an
on-line chat session. A few chats and you might be ready to meet.
