Letter from Isabel Walcott, the Founder of SmartGirl, June 2001

Hi Everyone!

Well, a lot has happened since last fall! SmartGirl has gone through some financial difficulties, but we are better now! I want to tell you all about it.

First, let me just say that you will see some changes on the SmartGirl site starting almost immediately. The biggest change is that SmartGirl is going non-profit! Yippee!! The site is becoming SmartGirl.org -- make a note of it -- and it is now owned and run by the University of Michigan. Even though I graduated from college ten years ago, I have to say I bet UMich is a great place to go to school, because they will actually be having classes where you can work on making SmartGirl run better! How cool is that?

Now that the University is handling things, you'll see the site get updated -- some parts for the first time in many months. They will be doing things a lot better than I have been able to recently, and they will be adding new features bit by bit too! You'll also notice some things will look different and be run differently, and there maybe some things you're not used to, but that's OK.

I know since you are all so smart and great you will help this transition happen by being patient, and keep filling out surveys and sending in reviews, and telling your friends and little sisters about SmartGirl.org when the time comes.

Thank you so much for your patience so far, too. I know there have been some frustrating delays.

This is probably the last time I'll write to you. I had a great time starting and running SmartGirl for the past five years, and I'm so happy that it is finally in good hands. I will miss you, the site audience, most of all. Grow up smart and strong, stick to your beliefs, and defend your important opinions, OK? And consider starting and running your own company someday. It's harder than can be imagined, but at the same time really, really fun.
