How to Give Securities to the New York Philharmonic

There are four ways to transfer securities to the New York Philharmonic, each with appropriate tax benefits:
  • You pay no capital gains tax on a gift of appreciated securities to the New York Philharmonic.
  • You may claim a Federal income tax deduction based on the full fair market value of the securities on the effective date of your gift.
I. If a bank or broker holds the securities for you - Electronic Wire Transfer (DTC)
  1. You may have your bank or broker wire-transfer the securities directly into an account the Philharmonic already holds at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; Attention: Gus Rhein, 2 Penn Plaza, 22nd Floor, New York, New York 10121. Tel: 212-613-6717; Fax: 212-613-6825. Your broker probably requires a letter of authorization. Download a transfer form*

  2.  New York Philharmonic Account Information: DTC # 0015, Account for the NYP
    NYP Account # 601-45324.
II. If you hold the certificates yourself
  1. Send the unendorsed stock certificates or bonds by Registered Mail, or deliver them by hand, to Marilyn Liebowitz. Include a letter of transmittal that states your name and address and the purpose of the gift.

  2. In a separate envelope, send by First Class or Express Mail to Marilyn Liebowitz, one signed stock power for each corporation represented by stock, or one signed bond power for each lot of registered bonds, filled in with the number of shares, name of the stock, and the current date. Sign your name exactly as it appears on the certificate.
III. If a bank or broker holds the securities for you (alternative)
  1. Instruct your bank or broker to act as the Philharmonic's agent, and transfer the securities into a gift or pass-through account for the Philharmonic. The New York Philharmonic's Federal Tax I.D. number is 13-1664054.

  2. Inform the New York Philharmonic of the gift either by phone or mail, so instructions may be issued for the disposition of the securities.
IV. If you re-register the securities
Please note: Re-registration takes much more time than the other three methods of transfer. We recommend you use one of the other alternatives.
  1. Instruct your bank or broker to have the securities re-registered in the name of the New York Philharmonic (Tax ID# 13-1664054).

  2. Mail the re-registered certificates to Marilyn Liebowitz with a letter stating your name, address, and the purpose of your gift.
