"Alberta
was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, fourth daughter
of Queen Victoria. When it was named, Alberta was one of four provisional
districts of the North-West Territories, and included only part
of the present province with the same name."
Located
where the Rocky Mountains meet the prairies, Alberta's diverse landscape
provides a quality of life second to none. It's also known for its
sunny climate and varied geography. The sun shines throughout the
cold winters and warm summers. The Rocky Mountains are perhaps Alberta's
most recognizable geographic feature dotted with hundreds of icy
blue glaciers, lakes loaded with fish, ancient forests and the view
of soft ranch lands rolling and stretching into lightened fields.
Begin your journey with one of the world's most scenic highways
then add some extreme adventure and you've got a memory for a lifetime.
Discover digging for dinosaurs, explore an icy cave, experience
an authentic western ranch, or stroll along an ancient glacier.
Alberta offers mountain bikers leading terrain coupled with landscape
of the Rockies, edging Alberta’s western border. Plenty of
hiking trails to discover, nature trails to backpacking excursions
with stunning scenery as a backdrop make Alberta a hiker's dream.
Each year, millions of visitors from around the world come to the
Calgary Stampede and Exhibition. “The greatest outdoor show
on earth”. The city of Calgary is transformed for 10 days
into town celebrating the cowboy culture. All of this excitement
with their natural attractions, transform with the change of Alberta's
seasons.
Winter is an exciting time of the year, one of Alberta's greatest
resources. Once the snow falls, it is time to get outside and play.
Experience skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing,
sled dog rides, and more. Your plans can be as action-packed or
as relaxing as you want them to be. After a day of fun in the snow,
retire to one of the cozy winter retreats where you can curl up
by a roaring fire or sit in an outdoor hot tub and be awed by the
northern lights. Alberta has it all and you do not have to go far
to find it. Spend the day shooting the rapids, then sleep under
the stars. Start your day with a tee off in the shadow of snow-capped
mountains, then saddle up a horse and head for the hills. No matter
what the season, an open invitation awaits you to come and discover
National or Provincial Parks, rivers, rocky lakes and obscure bits
of geography. The farther you venture into this outdoor playground,
the more you'll marvel at Alberta's incredible wealth.
