GLACIER BREWHOUSE STRIKES
GOLD!
The Glacier BrewHouse recently claimed top honors with a gold medal
at the 2004 Great American Beer Festival Competition, the largest national beer
competition in the United States today. The top three winners in the competitions 67
beer style categories were announced October 2 at the 23rd Annual Great
American Beer Festival Awards Ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver,
Colorado. This award comes on the heels of the Great Alaska Beer Festival back in January
where Glacier also scored gold with this same beer.
The Glacier BrewHouse was awarded the Gold Medal in the Barleywine beer style category for
its Big Woody Barleywine. The Barleywine category is seen by many as the granddaddy of all
beer styles, usually taking years to produce. The Big Woody itself is described as hugely
malty and intensely fruity with a brilliant amber-sunset color. Its like the
light of God just shines brightly on this beer as it sits in your glass, said one
judge. Aged in Jim Beam and Napa Valley wine barrels consecutively for one year each, the
beer also renders flavors of vanilla, bourbon, coconut, and more. Look for it on tap
during Glaciers Twelve Days of Barleywine celebration in December.
The 2004 Great American Beer Festival Competition winners were selected by an
international panel of brewing experts from an impressive field of 2000 entries received
from 380 U.S. breweries. More than 1,400 breweries were invited to compete. The Great
American Beer Festival is the premier judging event for the American craft beer
industry, says Nancy Johnson, Festival Director. Being chosen a winner
is truly an accomplishment. |
