Kasilof Launch Closure Scheduled

Kasilof River State Recreational Site Closure

Please voice your concerns over the scheduled closure of the Kasilof boat ramp. Although this facility is in much need of ramp improvements and increased parking, Alaska State Parks needs to hear your input, specifically the inappropriate timeframe and the hardships (to all user groups) that the scheduled August 1st. closure will bring.

Please stress several points which Parks may not be aware of, including (but not limited to) the following:

  1. This is a popular Coho fishery.
  2. The Kasilof River has only one run of Coho which typically peaks in early/mid August.
  3. The Kasilof River is really the only option for silver fisherman looking for a quiet, drift boat experience.
  4. Launching at Tustamena slack water and floating to Coho Cove or Trujillo's is NOT an option; it is a very long drift and offers fast and relatively rough water in the upper stretches, presenting dangerous conditions for all but very experienced rowers.
  5. Closing the ramp entirely on Aug. 1st also opens the potential for boaters to seek alternate and unacceptable options; ie trespassing, habitat destruction by launching off raw banks, and the potential increase of power boat usage by the guide fleet.

Finally, rather than just complaining, try to propose an answer. Be prepared to provide other more livable options or compromises, such as:

  1. Postponing actual improvements TO THE RAMP until a later date (perhaps Sept. 1st when the fishery goes to 'no bait' and boat launch's are minimal) to allow access to this popular August fishery.
  2. Limited hours for LAUNCHING/TAKE-OUT ONLY; ie boat ramp could be open from 5:00 am-8:00 am only. Parking facility could remain closed, which would allow contractors to continue to work.
  3. Open to suggestion and ideas!

Please contact Ranger Jack Blackwell ASAP at 262-5581 Extension 7, or send him an e-mail at jack_blackwell@dnr.state.ak.us to communicate your opinion.

NOTE: I encourage everyone to remain civil, courteous and professional in all correspondence regarding this issue; chewing someone's hindquarters is NOT the way to communicate or make headway with this issue.
