FONTANA, Calif. - Helio Castroneves won his third-straight MBNA pole Saturday in qualifying for Sunday's IRL IndyCar Series Toyota Indy 400 at California Speedway after he ripped off a fast lap of 217.479 mph in the No. 3 Marlboro Team Penske Toyota.
Castroneves will be joined on the front row by reigning IRL IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon, who qualified at 216.301 mph in the No. 1 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Toyota. Castroneves' teammate, Sam Hornish Jr., will be on the second row after a lap of 216.062 mph.
Dixon's teammate, Darren Manning, had a qualifying lap of 215.882 mph (fourth on the provisional grid) when the No. 10 entry made contact with the SAFER Barrier entering Turn 2 on his second lap. Manning was met by the Delphi Safety Team within seconds after climbing out of the car. He was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center for X-rays on his back. If Manning is cleared to drive by IRL Senior Medical Director Dr. Henry Bock, he’ll start at the rear of the field in his backup car.
