E-E-O-C notes increase in job lawsuits by teenagers
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

WASHINGTON Teenagers appear to be running into more sexual harassment and discrimination on the job.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has noticed a surge in lawsuits filed by teenagers against their employers. Before 2002, there were only a handful of such cases. Since then, there have been about 40.

Experts say among the reasons for the increase in harassment and discrimination lawsuits could be more teenagers on the job -- and greater willingness to report problems.

The E-E-O-C says most of the suits in the past two years involve young women in the restaurant industry. An E-E-O-C spokesman says many restaurant managers -- often young themselves -- aren't trained to avoid or recognize harassment and discrimination.

The E-E-O-C is planning an awareness campaign.
