Today I took Lee, Ben, John, and Marty out on the Sacramento River. We caught a total of 8 salmon, with everyone catching! The largest weighed in at 40 pounds, and the smallest weighed in at 12 pounds. We all had a great time, and I hope to see them back!

Salmon Fishing
The Fall Run King Salmon Season opened on July 16th. The Salmon have
been moving into the river system since mid-spring, and will increase
in numbers through September, and will crescendo in October. Northern
California is well known for its abundance of these fish, especially
during the Fall Salmon Run in the Sacramento River.
These fish can be caught on KwickFish lures and roe, and have been known
to grow up to 80 lbs and more. The opportunity for a Trophy fish is promising
from mid-November through December, and possibly into mid-January, when the
season finally comes to an end.
Trout Fishing
A year round peak fishery, Trout are marauding
and jumping at every little bug or fly they can spot. They're searching
for every new hatch. The water shows they exhibit, with their dazzling aerobatics,
make them even more fun to catch and release by the absolute bushel. Expect a
barrel of fun, and a boatload of beautiful fish.
The upper river remains good for both fly and spin anglers. 25 to 35 fish per day
for trout are still the norm, with the fish averaging 11 to 25 inches. For spin
fishing, try glo-bugs, hot shots, or crickets. For fly-fishing try nymphs. In the
evening, try a cattis, or an occasional stone fly.

Sturgeon
The pole busting Sturgeon season begins in
January and peaks February through April, while these fish are spawning, but
the bite remains good through August. These reel screamers won't give you a fight,
they'll give you a battle. Known to grow up to a ton, these leviathans have been
around for centuries and are considered a pre-historic fish.
Try soaking these Sturgeon baits. Salmon roe, crawdads, sardines, eel, grass
shrimp, ghost shrimp, mud shrimp, or shad.
If you're looking for productive fishing time over the next several months,
and beyond, you'll find it here in Northern California, on the
Sacramento River.

Shasta Lake Fishing Report
|
The bass in the lake are peak between late May and November. Work from about 0 - 30
feet deep. Try hula grubs, worms, crank baits and spinner baits. For top water, try
zorba spooks, pop r's, or my favorite... lucky strike sammy's. Be advised that the
shad I've seen in the lake have been about 2 - 3 inches, with an occasional 4-inch
fish.
Landlocked Salmon will now be a little deeper, about 40 -
90 feet. Try humdingers, cripple lures, coconuts, or your favorite minnow baits...
best behind a single or double sling blade. Start at Dry Creek, around towards
Big Backbone. Most fish have been coming at about 70 feet and deeper.
The Landlocked Salmon Fishery starts gaining serious steam in
March and will Peak in April and May, but remains good all year around.

Sacramento River Fishing Forecast for
July through December 2004
In the upcoming weeks, I'll be fishing the Sacramento River
for Salmon, Trout, Steelhead, and Sturgeon. The Salmon Fishery will Peak in October,
and the Big Guys... 50, 60, and even 70 pounders, will be around from mid-November,
through December, and possibly into mid-January.
Shasta Lake Fishing Forecast for
July through December 2004
In the upcoming weeks, the call for landlocked salmon and trout will be
trolling at 40 - 100 feet. The bass will be between 0 - 30 feet deep. Find the
thermocline, or a ball of shad, and have yourself a ball! The Landlocked
Salmon Fishery starts gaining serious steam in March and will Peak in April
and May. This Fishery remains good all year around.
