Ancient traditions and modern wonders exist side by side in fascinating Japan. Visit historical shrines, temples, and palaces while experiencing one of the most cosmopolitan cultures in the world. Explore both past and present as you improve your Japanese language skills daily.

Orientation in Tokyo

You and your group become better acquainted with Japan during a three-day orientation in Tokyo, one of the world's largest and most exciting cities. Spend a few days exploring this bustling metropolis, home to 10 percent of Japan's population. Begin your immersion into Japanese language and culture as you become attuned to the incredible sights, sounds, and aromas of this island nation.

Photo.Homestay and Language Training

Spend three weeks with a kind and generous host family. As a beginning, intermediate, or advanced student, you spend your mornings studying Japanese language and your afternoons learning about the culture during organized excursions and hands-on activities. Practice speaking Japanese with encouragement from members of your host family, who accept you as one of their own. Your language skills improve quickly as your independence and confidence soar. Take excursions with your group and host family and get to know Japanese teenagers from local high schools. At the end of the homestay, your group gives a sayonara party to thank all the host families.

Sample activities: Stroll through the ancient Kenrokuen Gardens, one of the three most famous gardens in Japan; visit an animation studio; dance, sing, and celebrate with local people at the Noto Peninsula Summer Festival; practice Zen meditation; visit the Ninja Temple and find trapdoors, secret passageways, and hidden staircases; swim in the Sea of Japan; participate in a traditional tea ceremony; watch sumo wrestling; practice your kanji while you learn the intricacies of Japanese calligraphy.

This was the best summer of my life. I learned about Japan's beautiful culture--and about myself. I got a true taste of independence as I learned to observe and enjoy so much that was new to me. Through the homestay, I discovered the simple joy of being accepted into a family's heart and home. As I made new friends, I was able to truly be myself and appreciate others for their unique qualities. I left Japan a changed person and, I hope, a better one. This summer, I found confidence and peace.
