Opening Night 2004
On Tuesday, September 21, 2004, the New York Philharmonic celebrated the start of its 163rd season with an Opening Night Gala.
Philharmonic Music Director Lorin Maazel led the Orchestra in Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with violinist Maxim Vengerov, and Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World." The chairmen for the evening — the most successful ever, raising more than $2.3 million for the Orchestra — were Lizabeth and Frank Newman and Hiroko and Hiroshi Tada.
The Gala was generously underwritten by The Bank of New York; Dinex Group LLC (Daniel, Café Boulud, db Bistro, Feast & Fetes); Ernst & Young; Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), Inc.; The Lizabeth and Frank Newman Charitable Foundation; and Time Warner.
Gala co-chairmen were Patricia and Philip Laskawy, Laura and Richard Parsons, Elizabeth and Thomas Renyi, and Joan and Joel Smilow.
In addition to starting the performance year, the Gala is the Philharmonic's most significant annual fundraiser, paving the way for all of the Orchestra's development efforts throughout the year. The generosity of our Opening Night guests allows the Philharmonic, America's oldest orchestra, to continue to present a concert season unparalleled in the world. Funds raised that evening also help the Philharmonic reach millions through its unique weekly, national radio broadcasts; extend exceptional educational programs to school children throughout the region; and bring music to the entire community through free Memorial Day concert at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine and summer concerts in the parks.
