1. What is the Website Hosting service? How does it work?
Bravenet provides both Free and Professional Website Hosting.

When you register for a Free Website Hosting package, you are given a free subdomain name (eg, myname.bravehost.com).

Professional Website Hosting packages require the use of a full domain name (eg, mydomain.com).

We provide you with web server storage space and the means to administer your website through your Bravenet account.

If you click on the Build a Website link near the top of our home page you can compare the hosting packages available. Free hosting is ad supported. All professional hosting provides advertising-free hosting. Be aware that there are ads associated with our other free web services. If you add these free services to a paid site, you will have ads associated with them unless you upgrade these services to the professional level.

2. How do I register for the free Website Hosting service?
1) Login to your Bravenet account.
2) Click on 'Build a Website' under the Hosting and Domains section.
3) Click on the 'Get Free Hosting' button below the Free Package.
4) Enter a subdomain name for your account. Your URL will become http://name_you_choose.bravehost.com
5) Click on the Setup Free Hosting button.

3. How do I register for the Professional Website Hosting service?
a) Login to your Bravenet account and click on 'Build a Website' under the Hosting and Domains section.
b) Click on the button button below the Professional Package of your choice.
c) Complete the steps provided on the following pages.

4. How do I set up my website?
A website is a collection of files written in HTML code to be served on the internet. You can start by creating a home page. When you enter your URL in the address bar and hit enter, the first file your browser looks for is index.html. Your home page must be called index.html. You can create other files and link to them using hyperlinks. It is up to you if you would like to organize your other website files into subfolders, much like the way you would organize files on your computer.

You must use your own web page or HTML editor. After you create your web files on your computer then you must upload them to the hosting server.

5. I have red Xs on my web page instead of my images. What do I do?
Red Xs always mean one of the following:

- the format of the image tag code is written incorrectly
- the path to the image file is incorrect
- the image file name is incorrect (file names are case sensitive)
- the image file has not been uploaded to the web hosting server
- you are trying to load the images from a server that does not allow remote loading/linking

If you right-click on any of those Red X boxes and go to Properties you can examine the path to the image. Alternately, open your webpage in your editor and examine your image tags.

You must have the image file uploaded to your web server or access it from another web site if remote linking is allowed by the hosting company.

You must look for the above mentioned errors and correct all the image tags as necessary.

6. How do I upload my web page files to my FREE BraveHost site?
There are two methods you can use to upload files to your FREE Bravehost website. We provide the Java FTP Applet and the File Manager option, in the Website Hosting service manager, in your account.

Login to your Bravenet account and click on Manage Website at the top of your main members area.

Click on ‘Java FTP Applet’. This launches the web-based FTP client.

or

Click on the File Manager & Editors option. This will launch the browser based file managing page. You can add, edit and delete pages in your webspace, with this option.

7. How do I upload files to my free Bravenet site using my FTP client?
This feature is available with Professional Bravenet hosting only.

8. What is the difference between http://mydomain.com and http://www.mydomain.com?
There is no difference. Both of these addresses will send you to the exact same website. For example, if you visit http://www.bravenet.com it is the same page as http://bravenet.com

9. Does Bravenet Website Hosting support server-side scripts such as cgi, perl, php, asp, cold fusion, etc?
We do not support cgi, perl, php, asp, or any other server-side scripts.

We do however support client side scripting languages, such as javascript, java, css, html, etc.

10. My Professional Website Hosting account was just setup, but I cannot get my e-mail. I also cannot connect, transfer files, or publish by FTP or Frontpage.
This happens because your domain name has not finished working its way through the internet. You need to allow 24-72 hours after you signed up for this process to complete.

Until your domain name goes live, and you are able to access your website, please upload your files by using our "Java FTP Client" or "File Manager" located in your Web Hosting manager.

11. I am trying to connect to my Professional Website Hosting account using FTP, but it keeps timing out!
This error is usually due to the fact that your FTP client is not running in "Passive" or "PASV" mode.

If you are unsure how to enable Passive mode, please consult your FTP Client's documentation.

12. I just registered for three years of your Professional Web Hosting, and received a free domain name. Is my domain name also registered for three years?
Your free domain name is registered for one year. After that time you are responsible for paying the renewal fees. You will be notified when your domain registration is nearing the expiry date.

13. Can I buy one of the Website Hosting packages with a check or a money order?
We can only accept credit cards (MasterCard and VISA) and PayPal for Website and Domain purchases. We cannot accept checks or money orders for these types of purchases.

You CAN use checks and international money orders to purchase Professional Webtools, but not Hosting.

14. What happens when I run out of available bandwidth?
Free Website Hosting accounts are 'metered' and when your daily bandwidth allotment has been exceeded we turn off access to your website. Your site will be restored the next day with a fresh new bandwidth allotment for the day. Unfortunately, this is a necessary step to ensure that all site accounts run as fast and reliably as they can.

15. What can I do to make my bandwidth last longer?
The biggest culprit as far as bandwidth goes, is large images and files made available for download. Images with a large filesize (like images pulled from digital cameras and web-cams) take up a lot of a sites bandwidth allotment. The average un-optimized .jpg photo image can be as large as 6MB. Thats 6MB of bandwidth for one download to one visitor... you would very quickly run out of bandwidth for the day.

Make sure all of your images are optimized in a graphics optimization program like Webrazor Pro or Paint Shop Pro. These will save your photo images at a much smaller filesize.

Don't offer downloads, or make sure the files you are making available are very small. Use a compression tool like Winzip to compress and shrink your files into one small .zip file.

16. How can I get more bandwidth for my site?
Extra bandwidth cannot be purchased for the Free Website Hosting service. Upgrade your website to one of our Professional Hosting packages. Our Basic package provides up to 10GB (10,000MB) of monthly bandwidth, and our Premium hosting package allows for 30GB (30,000MB) of monthly bandwidth.

17. Why can't I use my bravehost.com subdomain for my Professional Website address?
All Professional Website Hosting accounts require a full domain name (eg, mydomain.com).

The biggest reason for this is because you receive personalized e-mail addresses (eg, john@yourdomain.com) which would not be valid with a subdomain name.

When you register for a Professional Website Hosting account for a year or more, you receive a free domain registration.

18. What is the Visual editor?
The Visual editor is a special type of website editor that allows you to edit your pages by dragging and dropping your content directly into them.

To use our Visual Editor, please follow the instructions below:

1. Login to your Bravenet account
2. Click on "Manage Website"
3. Click on "Webpage Editor"
4. Find and click on the file you would like to edit in the right hand window.
5. Right-click on the file, and select "Edit in Visual Editor"

You can then edit this file without needing to edit the raw HTML source. Please note that this will change the format of any existing HTML pages if used to edit them by hand.

19. Why do I get a 'no index' or a 'permission denied' error when trying to view my web page?
Both of these errors are usually caused by the same problem. You do not have a file in your web directory called 'index.html'.

When you enter your URL in the address bar and hit enter, the first file your browser looks for is 'index.html'.

Because of this, your main page, or home page, must be named 'index.html' so that it is displayed first at your website address. Please rename or create a page with this name for your website to load at this address.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This file is CASE-SENSITIVE.

INDEX.HTML is not the same as index.html. This filename must always be in lower-case.

20. What types of files can I upload onto my Free Website?
Free Website Hosting only supports the following file types:

.htm, .html, .gif, .jpg, .png, .txt, .swf, .mid, .rmi, .au, .wav, .js, .css, .ico, and .bmp

Any free accounts which are found violating this policy will be immediately suspended and any offending files will be deleted.

File type limitations are not in place for Professional Website Hosting accounts, however if the files are copyrighted or contain copyrighted material they will be deleted and the associated account suspended.
