Current Fishing Report, June 20, 2004:

The Early Run of kings on both the Kenai and the Kasilof are strong in numbers and fishing for the most part has been good to excellent since late May to present. Recent heavy rains, followed by high pressure and abnormally high temperatures has caused glacial tributaries of the Kenai to "puke" heavy sediment loads and has thus turned the lower forty miles of the river to a silty, "chocolate milk" color. This has slowed the king salmon fishing to a halt and it will likely be another 4-5 days before decent visibility is restored and the Kenai returns to its normal turquoise green flow. On the Kasilof, heavy snow pack, rain and glacial met has the river at early July levels although fish remains steady for both wild and hatchery early run king salmon. Trout fishing in the Kenai is fair to good as long sunny days produce consistent action in the mornings and sporadic action in the mid day and afternoons. Fishing is contained to the section of the river between the Kiley River and Wally's Creek up to Skilak Lake as this is the only section with the decent visibility. Russian River Red salmon is rated excellent and ADF&G has opened the sanctuary section of the Kenai just below the confluence with the Kenai indicating the run is very larger and escapement numbers look very promising. Limits seem to be the rule in both the Kenai River below the Russian, as well as in the Russian River itself. Trout fishing is also said to be very productive in the Russian as well. Halibut fishing has been outstanding, with regular limit being taken daily. Tides are optimal this week. Across Cook Inlet, Big River Lake is off to a decent start with fair numbers of red salmon beginning to mass in the shallow waters adjacent to Wolverine Creek and Fisher Falls and good fishing is taking place daily. Bear viewing has also been very consistent with a good number of brown bears frequenting the rocky mouth of Wolverine Creek within Redoubt Bay. Helicopter king salmon fishing on the Chuitna River is rated good to excellent with multiple fish days being the rule. This concludes the fishing report for June 20, 2004.
