Travel to Asia - China, Mongolia, and Japan Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage traveled January 28 through February 4 to the People's Republic of China, Mongolia, and Japan for discussions with senior leaders in the three countries on issues of mutual interest.
In particular, in Japan, the Deputy Secretary participated with Vice Foreign Minister for Foreign Affairs Yukio Takeuchi in the U.S.-Japan Strategic Dialogue. They were joined on the second day by Dr. Ashton Calvert, Secretary of Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, for a trilateral discussion. Both the bilateral and trilateral talks covered a broad range of issues of mutual interest, such as the situation in North Korea and Iraq reconstruction. [photo gallery]
