Secretary of State Colin L. Powell traveled to India, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines, July 26-August 3.
In each country, Secretary Powell met with senior officials to discuss key bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual concern, including counterterrorism, security, and promotion of economic cooperation and global prosperity.
His discussions in India and Pakistan focused as well on reinforcing the process of de-escalation already begun between the two countries.
In Bandar Seri Begawan, the Secretary attended meetings of the ASEAN Regional Forum and the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference. At the ASEAN Regional Forum, the Secretary joined counterparts from 22 countries for discussions on security developments in the Asia-Pacific region, including a major focus on counterterrorism cooperation. At the Post-Ministerial Conference, the Secretary met with the foreign ministers of the ten ASEAN member states and the nine other ASEAN Dialogue Partners for discussions of regional political and economic issues, as well as U.S.-ASEAN cooperation.
