Built in 1860, this hotel is the only Italian building made with the same marble used to build the Cathedral (in Carrara there is a special quarry, whose marble is used exclusively for the reparations of the Duomo in Milan). At the beginning, it was a private Palace, that became a hotel in 1950. The same family still owns it.
Generally speaking, the future of the hotel is not only to offer services, but also a style of life. The Grand Hotel Duomo is all that and still more: a bit of a dream. Everybody would like to live in a beautiful house, served by people attentive at the tiniest desire. In a place like the Café des Arts, you can have a light lunch, or you can organize an important dinner at the Ristorante Duomo; or have an afternoon tea at the Orangerie, situated on the roof, from where you can admire the city and smell the perfume of the orange trees. The Grand Hotel Duomo is a place that conquests the heart, not only for its unique position, but also for the beauty of the decoration, for the works of art (all of them wonderful: the XVIIthe century engravings, Minguzzi's and Fornasetti's modern sculptures, Brunelleschi's paintings). In fact, it is the favourite hotel of the most important opera singers (the Scala is two steps away), painters and writers of the world.
