Transportation Security Forum - CAIRO, EGYPT (February 10, 2004) – Trade and transportation security in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia is the focus of a major conference sponsored by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) in cooperation with the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, State, Commerce and the World Customs Organization.  The event is designed to help nations to integrate new cargo and vessel security procedures and technologies into their operations.  The conference is taking place at the Grand Hyatt in Cairo, Egypt, and will continue through February 11, 2004.

USTDA Explores New Partnerships to foster Pakistan's Development During Inter-Agency Mission - ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN (June 9, 2004) – U.S. commercial involvement in fostering Pakistan’s development was the focus of a meeting this week between Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and senior U.S. Government officials from three agencies on a business development mission that concluded today.  Deputy Director Barbara R. Bradford represented the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) on the visit.

[ MAP: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka]South Asia Communications Infrastructure Conference -  More than 150 business and government representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the United States spent three days in New Delhi exploring current project opportunities, policy challenges and regulatory issues in the information and communications technology (ICT) field.  The USTDA-sponsored conference took place at the Grand New Delhi Hotel, in New Delhi, India with the cooperation of the U.S. Departments of State and Commerce, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

USTDA Director Askey and Secretary of State Powell Promote Transportation Security at APEC Summit - Over the past 15 years, the  Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum has served as a platform for discussing issues of common interest and priority to member economies in the Asia-Pacific region.  In October 2003, APEC Leaders gathered in Bangkok, Thailand, for a meeting to discuss a wide variety of matters on the APEC agenda, including trade facilitation and transportation security.  This international forum provided an excellent opportunity for the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to showcase its contributions and involvement in a wide variety of APEC-related activities.

USTDA GRANT PROMOTES AVIATION PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINA - BEIJING, CHINA (July 26, 2004) – On July 24, 2004, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a $500,000 grant to the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) in support of The Wright Brothers Partnership U.S. – China Aviation Cooperation Program in China (ACP).  The grant was conferred in a signing ceremony held at CAAC headquarters in Beijing.  Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta and CAAC Minister Yang Yuanyuan signed the grant agreement on behalf of the U.S. and Chinese Governments, respectively.                                                  FULL STORY >>>

ROMANIA: 2003 Country of the Year -  Congratulations to Romania, USTDA’s 2003 Country of the Year.  This award is based on the marked success that the agency registered in that country last year.  In numerous examples across a broad range of sectors, Romanian public and private sector officials have worked with the agency to develop a creative and effective grant program.  With growth and investment up across the region and European Union (EU) accession all but complete, this award is yet another indication that Romania and other countries in the region are coming of age.                                               FULL STORY >>>

USTDA Orientation Visit Supports Development of the Private Banking Industry in Iraq - ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA (June 17, 2004) – Reconstruction and modernization of Iraq’s banking sector is the focus of a U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) sponsored orientation visit that is taking place this week in New York City and Washington, D.C.  Representatives of 12 privately held Iraqi banks and the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq are participating in the visit.

El Salvadoran Minister of Environment Walter Jokisch (far right) was present at the grant signing.USTDA Grant Facilitates CAFTA Trade With EL Salvador - ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA (May 28, 2004) – Streamlining El Salvador’s import processing procedures is the goal of a $387,492 grant awarded today by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) to the Ministry of Economy (MINEC) of El Salvador.  The grant was conferred in a signing ceremony held at USTDA following the signing of the U.S.-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) at the Organization of American States offices in Washington, D.C.

USTDA Promotes Regional Development Through Partnership for Prosperity with Mexico - GUADALAJARA, MEXICO (July 9, 2004) – U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) Director Thelma J. Askey and other senior U.S. and Mexican officials and corporate executives announced several major initiatives to spark economic development in Mexico during a two-day session held in Guadalajara under the auspices of the U.S.- Mexico Partnership for Prosperity (P4P).   More than 600 U.S. and Mexican entrepreneurs and government officials met in Guadalajara June 28-29, 2004, to discuss business opportunities and prospects for supporting Mexico’s economic expansion.
