Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Spirit
cults persist on Flores today. The island is steeped
in witchcraft. Meet the roh, the local shaman and healer;
often old women. At Soa village, Central Flores, is
a site of Stone Age rites and symbols of the animist
faith with endows every object with a spirit. Needle-like
stones, with flatter stones on top serving as altars,
are built around a natural amphitheatre. In the center
stands a peo totem fetish shaped like a wooden doll;
another pole is topped with the Virgin Mary. When the
harvest is in, the Feast of Carabao is celebrated. A
buffalo is tied up in an open arena and spears and knives
are thrown at it until it's wild with pain and finally
bleeds to death. The buffalo is meant to suffer for
the sins of the people who have breached tribal custom
and is used as a scapegoat to keep sickness and rat
plagues away from the village. In Mengulewa, south-central
Flores, a wooden post is carved with the face of the
Buffalo Man, another one of the many features of ancestor
worship and animist belief present on Flores.
