The buffalo is meant to suffer for the sins of the people who have breached tribal custom and is used as a scapegoat to keep sickness and rat plagues away from the village. In Mengulewa, south-central Flores, a wooden post is carved with the face of the Buffalo Man, another one of the many features of ancestor worship and animist belief present on Flores.
