Frequently Asked Questions About Visas

What is a visa and why do I need one?

Most foreign nationals wishing to travel to the United States require visas. Nonimmigrant visas are for travelers coming to the U.S. temporarily for tourism, business, medical treatment, study, certain types of work or other temporary purposes. Immigrant visas are for persons coming to live permanently in the U.S.

The type of visa you must have is defined by immigration law, and relates to the purpose of travel. The visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to the United States port-of-entry and request permission of the Department of Homeland Security immigration inspector to enter the U.S. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States.
