Founded by Secretary of State General Colin L. Powell, America’s Promise has joined over five hundred organizations with the mission of ensuring that our nation’s youth have access to resources that will help them lead healthy, fulfilling and productive lives.
We at the March of Dimes believe that the future of volunteerism and service to our communities depends on the development and involvement of our nation's young people.
March of Dimes Commitments to America’s Promise include:
- To increase the number of participants in our youth leadership programs to 4,000. These programs, such as Youth on Board, provide young people with opportunities to become leaders in their communities.
- To double the number of current high school and college leadership councils promoting healthy lifestyles and practices among young people.
- To provide intensive leadership training to at least 500 youth volunteers through our National Youth Leadership Conferences.
- To create more opportunities for our youth volunteers through the expansion of our community service projects such as March of Dimes National Youth Month and annual youth-driven state health/leadership conferences.
- To educate America’s at-risk youth on the importance of healthy lifestyles involving responsibility towards their own sexuality through community programs such as Project Alpha.
