Understanding Privacy Policies
Privacy policies should be easy to read and understand. Nevertheless, the privacy policy may contain words or terms you may not be familiar with. Our glossary should help you understand words such as "opt-out" or "aggregated" and what they mean.
Here are the major things you need to look for in any privacy policy:
- What information the Web site collects: Web sites will tell you if they collect personal information from your children -- including name, address, email, telephone etc. Often, the Web site will state that they only collect information about what parts of the Web site visitors go to, but only use that information in the "aggregate."
- How they use that information: Web site privacy policies will state the ways in which they use information. Possible uses include passing it on to a package shipping company in order to deliver a purchase.
