Title: Author seeks ex Northsea supply boat crews
Name: John Griffiths
Email: ddraigmor@aol.com
URL:
Description

Tigers! The story of the North Seamen. I am currently writing a book about supply boats and their crews and am looking for individual stories, anecdotes - anything you might remember or think deserves to be told - about life in the North sea from the ‘supply boat’ crew point of view. This is something that deserves to be told, given that the spotlight has always been on the rigs and platforms - yet never on the many different kind of work boats that the offshore industry needed in order to survive. If you served offshore aboard tugs, supply boats, dive ships, survey ships, stand-by boats, anchor-handlers - any type of vessel which supported the rigs and platforms - then I would like to hear your story. It doesn’t have to be long. It could be about a trip you made, about a particular ship or company. About weather, about someone you sailed with - anything so long as it shows something of the seaman’s side of life in the North sea. You can be British, Norwegian, Dutch, German - I don’t mind as long as you have something to tell about a part of the offshore game that has, to date, never been recorded or recognised. You can be a cook, AB, 2nd Mate, Master - again, it doesn’t matter so long as you have something to pass on that you would like to see recorded in print to make our mark in the history of seafaring and to ensure future generations know what life was like offshore. My intention is to write the book around each individual’s story. To use your experiences to illustrate and colour the text. Pictures of ships will be provided by Mervyn Blower (www.mab-marine.co.uk) - but if you have photo’s that you would like to share then I will gladly also accept them, returning them once I have made a copy. Anything you send will be credited to you or, if you prefer to remain anonymous, that is fine as well. I really want to hear from others who worked in this trade between its start right up to today. Don’t worry about your grammar, style, English - all that will be taken care of. It is your experiences I want to record. The book will, I hope, show a snapshot of a part of maritime history ignored both by the oil industry and by maritime historians themselves. It was always seen as a ‘Cinderella’ industry and therefore not worthy of the ‘glory’ associated with higher profile sections of the marine industry such as passenger liners, cargo ships and so on. I have always believed that to be wrong and feel it is about time we changed that perception and put the offshore ‘supply ship’ game right up where it belongs. I can’t do it without those of you who were there. Please contact me with your stories, anecdotes - anything! - and tell a story that deserves to be told. I can be contacted by e-mail: ddraigmor@aol.com by post: John Griffiths, 18 The Ridings, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1UA By telephone: 01865 841197 (after 6pm). Tigers! The story of the North Seamen.
