The New York Philharmonic invites you to travel with the Orchestra to Japan on a Patron Tour, Monday, October 18 to Thursday, October 28, 2004. This very special trip, chaired by Carol Schaefer, will give you an opportunity to experience the music making of the Philharmonic, under the baton of Music Director Lorin Maazel, at two of Tokyo's glorious concert halls.
When you are not attending the concerts, you will have private tours of Tokyo landmarks, including the Imperial Palace, the city's great museums, and ancient shrines and temples. We will even take an early morning stroll through the famed Tsukiji fish market. We'll view majestic Mt. Fuji and spend time in Kyoto, one of the world's most historic and unique cities. We'll marvel at magnificent gardens, experience an authentic Japanese tea ceremony, and attend traditional Kagura and Kabuki performances.
A special, curator-led tour has been arranged of the spectacular Miho Museum, The Museum on the Mountain, in Shiga, designed by I. M. Pei to be assimilated into its very beautiful natural surroundings.
Meet the Musicians
Of course throughout the trip, we'll meet fascinating people, dine in elegant restaurants, and be entertained at exclusive parties. Perhaps best of all, there will be time for us to get together at leisure with our musicians!
The Philharmonic has been to Japan 10 times since its first visit in 1961. Each time, the Orchestra's concerts were met with thunderous applause and critical acclaim. However, the Fall 2004 trip will mark the first time for the Orchestra to perform in Japan under the direction of Music Director Lorin Maazel. Without a doubt, the Philharmonic's concerts will be welcomed with great enthusiasm and we hope that you will be with us to share the experience.
Sponsored by Citigroup, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Nikko Cordial Securities, Shinsei Bank, and Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K., the Orchestra will perform at Tokyo's NHK Music Festival in NHK Hall, and in Suntory Hall.
