Dive Sites of Pulau Redang
Redang has been increasingly growing in stature as a dive destination, long popular with Malaysian divers and now gaining a deserved international reputation.
The conditions here are perfect for nurturing corals and promoting healthy marine life with perfect substrates, clear water with temperatures ranging from 27 to 31.5°C. The reefs of the Redang archipelago consists of more than 55 genera of corals, with twice the number of species of fish populating the reefs. Of course this means the diving experience here is also very pleasant and interesting. Visibility of course depends on sea conditions but is best between April and October ranging from 20 to 40m.
Fish to look out for are snappers, jacks, rabbitfish, silver barracudas, clownfish, triggerfish and parrotfish. Turtles are a common sighting and you may also spot the occasional cuttlefish, squid and eagle ray. Featherstars, hydroids, black coral, anemones sea fans and sponges dominate the reefs of Redang. For macro-lovers there are also nudibranchs, mantis shrimps and occasional Spanish dancers. Certain Redang Island diving sites promise large pelagics such as whale sharks.
Other good news is that conservation is taken seriously here in order to protect the marine life in this marine paradise. Fishing, collecting corals and marine life and anchoring on the reef are all prohibited within two miles of Redang, meaning the beauty that is here may stay for all to harmlessly enjoy.
With at least 20 Redang diving spots to choose from all within a 30 minutes speedboat ride, the island offers plenty in the way of convenient and varied underwater experiences.
