For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner

 Wish I'd bought this grater MONTHS ago!
I purchased this after spending 2 hours zesting limes for a gourmet cookie recipe with the traditional potato-peeler+ food processor method. The most time consuming part is carefully scraping way all the white pith on the inside of the peel. The pith is very bitter and can ruin your recipe. This zester did the same job in 30 seconds and didn't even touch the pith. Just pure, perfect lime zest with no effort. Totally worth its weight in gold. Now I can make those cookies again without my hands cramping up after hours scraping the peels. Who has time for that? I've also started using it for grating parmesan. Definately takes Ceaser salads and pasta up a notch. I'm purchasing several more as gifts for my friends. Would make an incredible (and cheap) holiday/birthday gift for anyone, even the casual cook. Please note that the size of the grated zest or cheese is very fine and not ideal as a garnish. Parmesan or Romano grated with this tool melts quickly into the pasta, and doesn't lend much to the presentation. Tastes great, but hard to see. If you're looking for a garnishing tool, this is not it.
an absolute marvel
This tool takes the place of several little gadgets in my kitchen. I had a little handheld zester that worked fine, but was somewhat difficult in trying to get the maximum amount of zest from a lemon or lime. Not a problem for this tool. A few quick rubs around the fruit, and you have lemon/lime zest confetti.
Grated cheese? This tool gets the cheese so fluffy and light that it melts in no time, and is much easier to use than my traditional grater. I'm a little nervous about using it for things like nutmeg or dried ginger, but that's just because I don't know if it can be done. For anything soft, like fresh ginger, garlic, cheese, zest, this is perfect. The shreds are probably too fine for things like zuccini, so it won't COMPLETELY replace your box grater, but it sure makes fine shredding a lot easier.
The only (MINOR) drawback is that it can be difficult clean, espcially since the pieces can get very small and melt or stick quickly, and the ridges on the underside can capture things and make it difficult to get to them, but aside from that, this is a wonderful product. BETTER than a zester or grater.
My favorite little kitchen gadget!
I honestly do not know what people did before the invention of the microplane grater/zester. What a clever product this is! I cannot begin to describe the satisfaction I get from the perfect piles of pith-free lemon zest and light and fluffy parmesan and romano chesses that it produces (effortlessly at that). That's not to mention how easy it is to grate chocolate, garlic, ginger, whole nutmeg, etc. It is also a very safe product- no more bulky and slippery cylindrical graters that end up scraping you along with the food! It is easy to use, clean, and store and stays sharp virtually forever-a true ergonomically correct tool. I recommend this for all cooks- it is a kitchen necessity right up there with measuring cups, spoons, and pans! Plus, at such a low price- how can you go wrong? The microplane is definitely my favorite utensil of all time.
