Aire and Calder Navigation and River Aire

Description: A network of waterways promoted by Acts passed in 1699, 1774, 1820 and 1828. Still partly commercial waterways although there is much pleasure traffic.

Points of Interest: A number of locks have been modernised to European standards where boatmen should observe coloured light signals.

Description: A short arm that leaves the Aire & Calder Wakefield Section and terminates at Dewsbury Basin.

Aire & Calder Main Line

Description: From junction with Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Main Line, and Leeds Bridge to entrance locks to Goole Docks, junction with River Ouse.

History: Wholly opened from Leeds to Wakefield in 1704 and to Selby in 1721.

Points of Interest: The large locks are electrically operated, by lock keepers when commercial traffic is expected but by boaters at other times. A red light means don't enter the lock, green means enter and amber means the lock is boater operated.

  • CH106 (Aire & Calder Navigation) 40 minutes approx., Produced by IA Recordings On a hot summer day in August 1997, the Cawoods Hargreaves push tug CH106 takes full 170 tonne compartment boats to Ferrybridge C power station where they are marshalled, lifted 12m by the gigantic boat hoist and coal tipped into hoppers. The empty boats are then re-assembled into a train and towed through Ferrybridge Lock. Produced with support from the National Waterways Museum at Gloucester. Note there is no sound commentary.   • Humber Energy (Aire & Calder Navigation 32 minutes approx., Produced by IA Recordings This video follows Captain Jim Pearson as he steers a John H Whitaker tanker 'Humber Energy' from Immingham up the Aire & Calder Navigation to Leeds with a load of 550 tonnes. There is a commentary from John Pearson to accompany the film. Available on tape.

Aire & Calder Navigation - Selby Section

Description: This consists of a navigable length of the River Aire plus the Selby Canal and forms a link between the A&CN; main line at Bank Dole and the River Ouse at Selby.

History: Cutting of the Selby Canal started in early 1775, built by William Jessop early in his career and opened in 1778.

Alford Canal project

Description: Proposals for a canal from the Lincolnshire town of Alford to the coast. The canal was never built.

History: The first survey of a route was in 1765. A further reports and estimates were made in 1784, 1807 and 1825. An enabling Act was passed on 5th May 1826.
