Boat To The Southeast Islands: Freighters which ply between Bali and Timor
call at Benoa Harbor fairly regularly. Pelni has a boat to Kupang, Timor
about once every 3 weeks, takes 410 days depending on how many islands
the boat calls at along the way; costs Rp13,000 including meals. Nusa
Tenggara Lines also does inter-island trips. Try hustling around Benoa
Harbor for a lift on a boat or a yacht; there could be a lot of competition
from other travelers. For Lombok, from where you island-hop east, board
the ferry at Padangbai on the east coast of Bali; leaving each morning
circa 11 am. For Sumbawa direct, the Shipping Office Darma Karya in Stasiun
Suci sells tickets on the ship Kuda Putih. Sails every Sat. at 10 am and
returns to Denpasar on Sun. afternoon. Takes 20 hours to Badas Harbor
close to Sumbawa Besar on the western end of Sumbawa, and costs Rp4000.
for Komodo Island: Darma Karya Shipping Office in Stasiun Suci sells tours
to Komodo Island on the Garuda I from Padangbai to Komodo and return;
charter 7 days (maximum 20 passengers) for Rp1 million (about Rp50,000
per person). Plus you must pay for food: 7 days, Rp15,000; or 10 days
about Rp20,000. The company graciously pays for the goat. Much less expensive
is to fly to Bima, then negotiate for a motorboat. It's more expedient
to get your permit to visit Komodo Island in Singaraja rather than wait
until you get to Labuhanbajo. Get this written permission from Departemen
Pertainian Dirjen Kehutanan Seksi Perlindugan Dan Pengawetan Alam Bali,
JI. Gadjah Mada 2, Singaraja. Takes a couple of days. After you get your
papers from Singaraja, take them to PKN DAK XV/NUSRA (close to the stadium)
for a stamp and the commander's signature. On Kuta Beach travel agents
who sell tickets to Komodo, using local transport, have sprung up. The
price ranges from US$125-150 depending upon how much you fly.

we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine. Everything Bali Indonesia |
