Surfing: Good body surfing with crystal clear water and top to bottom tubes. The best months are during the Aussie winter, March-July. Waves seldom get over 2 m high. During the summer, the weather is changeable, from glass to cyclone and then back to glass in five hours. Watch out for sneaky undertows and cross-currents. Take a prahu out to the reef, it's safer. There's a wide range of boards for rent (Rp400 per day) and for sale leaning up against losmen walls. Buy wax for your board at Sunshine Surfboard Shop, JI. Legian, near Legian, but it's expensive so bring your own. There are many loud arrogant Aussie surfies acting like they never left Manly or Cedi:na; even down to the Aussie manhood thing of throwing girls in the water. Already a breed of young hip Balinese surfers have evolved, wearing neck pendants, talking about their boards, and calling you 'mate' or 'Hey, Spunky!'.

Nusa Dua: Bemos leave Kuta from near the intersection at the start of Bali Beach road when enough people want one. Nusa Dua has just as nice a beach as Kuta but no losmen to stay in yet (maybe in 1977-78). The government is building a giant tourist project. From Nusa Dua to Benoa it's 8 km, then cross over to the fisheries and the Pelni Office side, Rp50 by boat (plus Rp50 extra for your pushbike), then on to Denpasar.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
