LEG IAN

Rp60 from Denpasar by bemo. Or a pleasant two km walk north of Kuta Beach. This little village is still out-of-the-way from the speedy Kuta vibe; visiting Kuta after Legian is like going into the big city. For people who want to stay for several weeks or months, they usually spend a couple of days on Kuta then move down to Legian. Legian has got the worst reputation for stealing. They will steal stuff above your head or from under your very bed while you sleep, so lock your windows and doors at night. If there are bars on the windows move all valuables out of reach. Many of the rip-offs are inside jobs or tip-offs by the guys who work in the losmens. They usually wait right up to the day before you plan to leave so it's too much hassel for you to complain to people or track your goods down. So never tell your losmen when you're leaving. Legian is really being pushed by the, trendy fun-in-the-sun Australian travel agents now, a playground for young travelers. It also has it's share of resident smack freaks. There's good music (sometimes live performances at Tama's), outstanding cheap food, two bicycle repair shops, two laundries. There are dances at least every other day: aria (opera), Barong, Kecak, and the Ramayana, all Rp600. For mushrooms, go down to the cow paddocks near the beach, but really early before the locals pick them clean. Families have even begun to cultivate mushrooms in their backyard gardens for the wholesale market.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
