Soroako

vicinity of Soroako: In this part of Celebes are found 2 magnificent and very deep lakes, Matana and Towuti. Lake Towuti is 48 km wide and the largest lake of Celebes, comparable in size to Lake Geneva. Mighty beautiful. Lake Matana has burial caves. Besides the bus from Malili to Wawondula and then on to Timampu (on the shore of Danau Towuti), Inco Mining Co. has the only vehicles to the lakes. Enquire about the possibility of a launch on D. Towuti. There are recreational speedboats for Inco Co. staff on D. Matana which is excellent for swimming, water skiing, or sailing. Or you could get boats to Matana village at the head of the lake and to Nuha village across the lake. isolated societies in Central Celebes: The Tolare people are found in Watubula, Dolo subdistrict, Donggala District, also in Lobu, Parigi subdistrict, numbering about 5000 in all. The Wana (approx. 6000) live in Ulu Bongka subdistrict, Poso District. The 500 Kahumamahoen are in Sinarang, Batui subdistrict, Luwuk Banggai District. The only native batik technique outside of Java and Madura is found in Central Celebes, a very ancient onecolored batik in which starch is used instead of wax. Wotu: At present Inco is building a road from Malili to Wotu. Though there are no commercial vehicles doing this route yet, it is a proposition now for 4-wheel drive vehicles or motorcycles. Or walk it in 2 days, crossing several rivers by sampan; they ask Rp1000 but just give them Rp50. Sleep in the open in the middle of the jungle. There's a horrible hotel in Wotu, Rp500; kids stand under your rooms and look in peepholes. from Wotu: To Palopo by bus, Rp750. From Sabang, Rp300 by taxi from Wotu, do the short walk to Lembong on the road to Seko. An up and down trek, 3 days up, 3 days back, which means 6 days of eating only brown rice. Lake Poso, 80 km to the north, is reachable by a 3 day walk from Wotu. Take a boat across Lake Poso to Tentena, then a minibus Rp750 from Tentena, or walk 2 more days and 2 nights to Poso, then take a boat on to Gorontalo or Manado.
Map 1- from Poso to Pendolo: From Poso take a minibus to Tentena, Rp750, 3 hours or so, leaving about 8:30 am. Tentena has a nice green setting on the lake. There's some rigorous but interesting hiking in the vicinity through thick rain forests with leeches. Get to go to each new town with a new 'introduction'. The eastern Toraja live around 1500 m deep Lake Poso. These Torajans make masks, pemia )'with handles'), and use them at funerals with a bag of cleaned bones attached. From Tentena board a small outrigger to Pendolo, Rp500, 3 more hours,' leaving around 1 pm; it doesn't depart unti the minibuses arrive from Poso.Map 2- from Pendolo to Wotu: Fn dolo walk level for about 10 km, ascend 20 I gradually descend for 52 km to Mangkutz longest uninhabited stretch is the 18 km froi village to Perbatasan. From Pendolo to P tana a highway is being improved by works you may get lifts part of the way in their trut road is not far from completion and it's : going walk. Stay at the bus depot in Manl Rp400. From Mangkutana catch a bus at Palopo, Rp650.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
