History of Manado

A heavily industrialized province, it has a higher living standard than most other regions of Indonesia. In fact, this very wealthy province even feels like a separate republic. The biggest copra production area of Indonesia (18,000 tons a month), everyone tends their plot of coconut palms, even teachers, bankers and army colonels after hours. Also the most heavily Christianized province of Indonesia. The style of North Celebes houses is unique to each region; window sills and porch railings are lined with potted plants, garden and yard vegetation is lavishly tended. history: Legend says that the original Minahasan tribes were divided by the God Muntu Untu at a huge boulder, seen today on the slopes of the Tonderukan. On intersections of Manado you'll notice numerous statues of ferocious legendary warriors who once guarded the city. Portugese traders came first, as early as 1563. The Spainards arrived next, converting the population to Catholicism. When Dutch planters started cultivating coffee here in 1827, they brought in their wake overbearing Dutch reformist Protestants who began missionary work. By 1860 the entire population had been re-converted. Minahasa soon became known as the '12th Province of the Netherlands' because of the closeness of its religious, military and economic ties with Holland. Most aspects of Minahasan culture were obliterated by the Dutch. But once in a while you see long white haired elders in the villages; also distinctive ikatweaving draws upon their vanished megalithic culture.
music and dance: June, July and Aug., harvest-time, is the festive season for pre-Christian dancing, conch shell orchestras, as well as performances of the mesmerizing wooden zylophonic ko/in tang orchestra, as exciting as the wildest Jamaican blue beat. The origin of this music is Batu on the road to Likupang on the north coast. But go out to different villages; venues change weekly. Ask the hukum tua (village chief) what music is happening; usually on a Sunday. The Maengket is a typical Minahasan cultural dance, consisting of 3 parts: Owey Kemberu, performed during harvest time; the Marambak Dance staged at the inaugeration of a newly built house; and the Lalayaan Dance, performed at a party when a man announces his fiance.transport: Dry season is May to October, the rainy season Nov. to April. If you're coming from man Jaya and Maluku put away your surat jalan; you don't need one in Celebes. If you show it, every official will want to put his stamp on it. You can't travel yet by road down the North Celebes peninsula into Central Celebes. Instead fly from Gorontalo to Palu or else cross Teluk Tomini by boat from Gorontalo to Ampana, Parig), Bunta, or Pagimana, then further by boat to Poso. Then by a combination of minibuses, trucks and walking it's 34 days to Wotu, from where you can get another bus south. Or from Wotu a boat leaves nightly for Malili, Rp500, 3 hours. A road is nearing completion between Wotu and Malili.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
