GORONTALO

If you come by boat down the west coast and land at Kwandang, take a minibus Rp5-600 one hour's drive south to Gorontalo. In the rainy season it's more difficult to reach. Gorontalo is a small town, like an overgrown Inobonto. Few vehicles. Young girls use colorful sarongs as veils. The police send out the longest questionaire in Indonesia (9 pages); count on at least 1 'h hours at kantor po/isi. stay:Namseng Losmen is Rp550; bare essentials. Cross the street to Teluk Kau which costs Rp650 but is a bit roomier with gigantic canopied double beds. Anthon Massa, JI. Jen. S. Parman 5/37, has been known to put travelers up as well. eat: Meals at Teluk Kau's restaurant are a slight ripoff. Rumah Makan Dirgahaga, JI. Pertiwi, specializes in goat:sate, curry, soup. Sweet Corner nearby has a good variety of meals and drinks. Across the street from the bemo station, 15 minutes walk from Namseng Losmen, is a good fruit and vegetable market. vicinity of Gorontalo: Dahawalolo, 13 km from Gorontalo, has the best panorama of 2 m deep Limboto Lake; also has a bathing place with pools of 5 different temperatures. Hire a prahu (Rp3-400) from boys to visit little fishing villages. Can go to the other side of the lake (about 12 km) but they want more rupes. Other places to visit in this upland plain are: Utapato, a bathing place and view over the lake; Batudia, bathe in steaming water; Lombongo, another hot bathing spot, but in the jungle. See Anthon Massa at Kasendukan Tours and Travel Service, JI. Jen. S. Parman SK 5/37, Gorontalo, to arrange cheap or expensive travel to hotsprings around Kwandang, Limboto Lake, river travel along the north coast, pigeon-hunting, swimming, jungle walks.

INOBONTO
Rp500 from Kotamobagu, buses leaving daily. A pleasant place to hang in, quiet and no motor traffic except for honking buses announcing their departures. Like Mexico, sleepy and lazy. Only half dozen travelers a month come this way. The Korean highway being built will change all this. stay: Hotel Tepi Laut ('Edge of the Sea') is located so close to the harbor that you can hear the waves. Joje will want Rp750 but just threaten to move to Losmen Haji Idrus right around the corner (bad lighting), which is cheaper at Rp500. Eat at Haji Idrus, Joje's food is too bland. from Inobonto: Have tea with the harbormaster on his porch on the beach and discuss with him which boats to the north or south he expects will be arriving. You might have to wait 3-4 days, but he'll send a boy to your losmen when a boat comes in. It won't leave for hours anyway. Boats south to Kwandang stop in small Muslim coastal towns rite Bintauna, Boroko, Buko; pay no more than Rp2500 through to Kwandang. Or from Boroko to Kwandang by kapal motor, Rp1000. If you speak Arabian along this west coast of Minahasa, you're in. You can also hire a horse and ride it across the rivers. There are also many boats carrying copra between Inobonto and Bitung; ride along for Rp2500-3000.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
