the background. Pepper seeds are drying in the sun. Tomohon is a center
for Christian mission groups. The few losmens chacge Rp500. getting there:
From Manado take a bemo to Wanea, Rp40, then a minibus up the mountain
to Tomohon, Rp150. Pass by wonderful views of the city and see strings
of lights below at night. Honky-tonk beer joints and restaurants perch
on the side of the road all the way up. At Tinoor, halfway up the mountain
to Tomohon, experience real ethnic Minahasan cooking: mice, dog (very
peppery hot), wild pig (babi hutan), and a gin calledcap tikus (like Geneva),

The rich clove villages of Sonder and Lahendong feature hotsprings in
the middle of a pine forest. At Tara-Tara village outside of Tomohon contact

in Bali
we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated.
Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the
redemption of their souls.
