Using Asbestos at Home - is it Worth It?
With all the information about the hazards posed by asbestos, you are entitled to ask the question - is it worth using asbestos at home? Is it worth putting the lives of your near and dear ones at jeopardy, knowing the risks involved with asbestos usage? The obvious answer is no. However, there are some products that cannot do without asbestos, so you cannot say that the use of asbestos or otherwise is entirely in your hands. Some essential items have asbestos, you cannot do without them.
For example, asbestos is used in the brakes and clutches of cars. Not everyone can afford custom-made brakes and clutches with material other than asbestos. In some cases, asbestos usage simply becomes a matter of cost. In third world countries, it is cheaper and easier for a person from the low or middle-income bracket to use asbestos as a roofing or tiling material. So in many cases, people might use asbestos even though it might not be their preferred choice of material.
Having said that, it is pertinent to know what to do and what not to do when someone has decided to use asbestos in the house. No one would like to knowingly put the lives of their near and dear ones in jeopardy. However, if they opt for asbestos, the least they can do is know the hazards involved, and what they should or should not do with asbestos in the house.
Keeping Your House Safe Despite Asbestos
The first rule in asbestos safety is to ensure that you do not, at any cost, damage the asbestos fiber. This is almost a cardinal rule, and has to be strictly followed. Following this rule ensures minimal risk for all in the house.
In the event that the asbestos material is broken or some form of damage occurs to it, restrict movement of your near and dear ones in that area. Make sure that nobody goes near the damaged asbestos. That way, the chances of them inhaling asbestos fibers remains at a minimum.
Do not sweep or use the vacuum cleaner in the damaged area. Sweeping that area will cause the asbestos fibers to disperse from there into the air, and then you have absolutely no control over asbestos inhalation.
make sure that no drilling activity happens near damaged asbestos. Drilling can cause further disintegration of asbestos fibers, and increase risk levels of inhalation.
Make sure that you all avoid walking through the area that has damaged asbestos. Also, in the event asbestos in used in the roof or in shingles, make sure that you always leave those areas undisturbed. That way, there is little chance of the asbestos breaking up.
Repairing Asbestos Damage
Whether the damage is minor or major, where asbestos is involved, stay away from doing repair jobs yourself. There is no need for foolhardiness. There are professionals for the repair job; leave it to them. Why invite trouble when there are professionals do the job. Just sit back and watch.
