Home Business Isolation

Home Business Isolation
As you transition into the home business world you may find that you feel somewhat isolated. You don't have to move a water cooler into your kitchen and invite the neighbors over for gossip to create a more tenable situation. You can plan for human contact and adjust your attitude. When you think about it, most of your on the job interactions were probably not high-quality or ideal. Most were probably not even in your control, and some may have even been unwanted.
The benefit of home business isolation is the freedom it allows you to eliminate unwanted co-worker interruptions, and to plan how and by whom your work will be interrupted. In time, you will come to appreciate the flexibility your home business offers. If you are going stir-crazy, I hope that time comes sooner rather than later.
Home Business and Cabin Fever
The upside is that you will probably have fewer distractions. Still, if you begin to feel like the walls are closing in on you, plan a short walk. The fresh air will help you collect yourself so that you can get back to business. If you are the kind of person that works well alone, an occasional walk may be all you need. If you crave a lot of contact, you may need to plan in advance so that the distractions of silence and isolation don't consume you.
Home Business owners in the second category might try some or all of the following suggestions:
Plan a lunch date
Take your work on the road (purchase a laptop, or work on a public computer - Kinko's comes to mind)
Hire a part-time helper
Schedule brief telephone dates throughout the day
Attend workshops or meetings
Share office space
Of course, if your home business is consumer driven, the obvious solution is customer contact. When customer traffic is down, consider ways to reach out and attract new and returning business. First, let customers know that they are appreciated. Many businesses send holiday greetings or offer premiums such as pencils or calendars. You can also try more personal ways to connect such as hand-written notes, a focused email or snail mail campaign and seminars.
Many people feel nervous about speaking in front of others. Don't let that stop you if you think a seminar might be a good marketing tool for your home business. You don't have to completely conquer your fear and you don't have to do it perfectly the first time. Its a good idea to have a few friendly faces in your audience and to concentrate on the strong skills that you bring to the task.
In time, you may become so engrossed in sharing the thing you are so passionate about with others that you forget about your fear.
Home Business Connection
If you find that an unmet need for contact is hurting your business-rework your business plan. One of the most important considerations when planning a home based business is you. You are the most valuable asset to your business. You may need to expand or refocus your home business priorities to include the intangible benefits you hope to derive. You need not abandon the original idea but you must take a look at the gaps you feel and plan to fill them.
