The most difficult part is to get clients to give you business, for them to look past the small makeup of your small business.
And sadly, sometimes having the best product or service is simply not good enough.
Bringing Your Small Business to the Fore
Let's take a website as an example. Having a website, hosting, domain name registered is just the tip of the iceberg. Customers won't find you or your website until you start promoting your products and services to others - a large audience. Small business owners have to make a lot of effort being with business people from all walks of life just to bring in the bread. Networking, promoting, talking to, shopping, fishing, drinking...etc. They're all part and parcel of introducing your business, by developing a strong connection with others.
Your mind have to be tuned in to marketing and promotion all the time. Some people say that small business owners have to get accustomed to promoting and marketing in their sleep. And that is the truth - we have get used to promoting and selling our products and services, even in our sleep!
A Plan for Your Small Business
Let's think about it for a moment - who would make the ideal customer for your small business? An advertising company? A soap manufacturer? A hotel? A restaurant? Think about it and write down everyone you can think of who would make an excellent customer for your business. When we say 'ideal', we mean someone who would find your products/services most useful. Now, get a piece of paper out and write it down.
Then, think of ways to get them to notice you. This can be done by thinking or asking others on how those people actually find their sources.
Keep Your Eye on the Newspapers
The newspaper is a wonderful tool for the small business owner. Not for the news or the comics section, but for the business section! In the business section, there are tons of news of people being promoted, tactics and projections of companies. You can gain a whole lot by just reading about and sending personalized mails to these people introducing yourself to them.
Small Business, Big Giver
Watch out for events that you can make use of to offer your products, services out for free or maybe you can tie up with the organizer offer a promotion, a contest or a sort of affiliation. Get creative and be daring to call them and offer what you have to them. As organizers, they are often appreciative of free stuffs that they can use to entice more exhibitors to their events.
Go Where Your Clients May Go
You don't have to travel all the around the world to get to your clients but the best thing for a small business is to consider going to seminars, conferences, meetings...etc that your clients may go. This is one of the best ways to get in touch with them - strategically get under their noses.
Free Things Work Like a Charm
Charming, cheap, and cute little gifts work like a charm. You give a little and you may get a whole lot back in return. Samples or premium gifts, just ask the recipient to tell others about your products/services if they find the gifts good.
Ask Why
One of the things that we don't do and should is ask the clients for their feedback when they DON'T buy from you. But why, you may be asking? Well, you want to know why they don't want to buy from you and you can make improvements to your services/products so that people like these will one day buy from you, wouldn't you?
